Crimson Fist Awarded Certificate of Appreciation by Their City

On September 17th, 2021, Crimson Fist of the California Initiative was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the city of Oakland for all the work and dedication they've put into helping and patrolling.

"Today I was honored to receive this certificate of appreciation from the Oakland city council and the people of #Chinatown #Oakland for my patrol work in the neighborhood, along with the other groups working to keep Chinatown safe. Suffice to say, today was a very cool day. #StopAsianHate #StopAAPIHate #ChinatownOakland #OaklandChinatown #SuperheroesAgainstRacialPrejudice #BayAreaSuperheroes #唐人街 #TheRedVest #TheInitiative #LoveChinatown #ProtectChinatown @protectoaklandchinatown @asian_frontliners @uplifting.our.elders" - Source

In Memory of Umbratica

2021 has not been as kind as we would have liked. On April 9th, we have lost another of our own due to a severe asthma attack, a man we knew as Umbratica.

He had a big heart and was there for people when they needed it. He meant more to us than he knew.

He would often be found helping support others who needed it via kind words and advice. He was there for many who were devastated they were taken advantage of by their former mentor - a very heavy subject - but he did not shy away from trying to help them if he could. He would offer fitness advice and tried to help build up people in the RLSH community in both skills and spirit.

He also worked hard on trying to help bring awareness to and clean up the environmental issue of litter in Jamaica.

Rest in Power, Umbratica. You fought until the very end. We will also fight to be our best and do our best. You will not be forgotten.

If you wish you help his family, they have created a GoFundMe here: https://gofund.me/fbbf8b4b

Team Spotlight: X-Faction

In 2020, The Grim left the XJL and created the X-Faction. I was curious what they have been up to, and had to ask about the Minority Report series on YouTube as well as what else they were doing. Below is my interview with Brick, one of the co-leaders.

Discordia:
“What are your goals with the Minority Report? What's it all about?”

Brick:
“XFaction is a fairly diverse group of individuals with intent on promoting social change and justice. We started the Minority report series for a few reasons. We wanted to highlight "minority" voices and struggles and uplift community organizations as well. This series allows individuals an outlet to share their journey/story in effort to educate others while breaking down stereotypes.”

Discordia:
“What made you want to start?”

Brick:
“We were all members or former members of the XJL and have worked together for a few years. We originally started by attending local protests in the wake of George Floyds death. Grim started getting our feedback and interest about forging a new group focused on issues affecting minority communities with an immediate target around BLM and racial inequity.”

Discordia:

“What other things has XFaction been working on or doing you'd like to talk and get the word out about?”

Brick:
“X-Faction maintains its sovereignty while members do assist and promote events, actions, and activities of other groups with similar agendas. We are actively recruiting and have a social media presence via youtube, Twitter and Instagram.

We are currently in the middle of "BlackOut SD". This is a coordinated effort between our local network of organizations to provide daily enrichment during the entire month in honor of Black History Month. Details can be found on our calendar but we have discussions, classes, movies, games, poetry, and more events planned.”

Thank you Brick for the interview!

The International Hero Cooperative Fundraiser for National SuperHero Day

For National Superhero Day, The International Hero Cooperative is running a fundraiser for Support For Families Of Children With Disabilities. This nonprofit helps “ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need have the knowledge and support to make informed choices that enhance their children''s development and well being”.

This foundation provides free services to affected families by providing clinics, support groups, training, fun developmental activities for disabled children, etc. They are based in San Francisco, California, but help families throughout the entire state.

Spectral Hawk and the other admin in the IHC (Beacon, Black Mantis, and Löwenhardt) chose this particular charity as their research indicates the Covid-19 Pandemic has heavily impacted those with disabilities. Unfortunately, these foundations are being hit hard by the virus and are not receiving the funding necessary to maintain their mission due to the virus.

Please consider donating to this amazing foundation to help support their mission during these difficult times. Thank you!

COVID-19, What Can You Do?

I've seen a number of people wondering what they can do during this crisis, or what more they can do to help if they can't go out on a patrol or homeless outreach or anything else that requires going outside. What can you do while in quarantine? I've made a list here, and feel free to do your own research on things you can do to help.

  • Check out r/COVIDProjects on Reddit and see if there are any needs you can fill... there are a LOT of things listed here alone.
  • Keep an eye out on your neighbor's homes/property while they are out working or getting supplies or sleeping.
  • Read your local social network groups/boards/etc to see what's happening locally and if there is anything you can do to assist others in your area.
  • Share missing persons/pets posters online.
  • Talk to your family and friends (excluding abusive/toxic family) over text/video chat/call, they need to know you're there for them and to be reassured that things are still alright. Even if you're in quarantine, they may also have things they need to get off their chest in these trying times.
  • Study survival skills in order to better help yourself and others if such skills are ever needed.
  • Download https://fold.it/ on your computer, play the game to help scientists solve the COVID-19 problem. (Credit to Löwenhardt/Shieldmaiden for this idea)
  • Download Quarantine@Home and donate your spare computer power to testing possible medications for the disease.

High Risk:

  • Do glove pickups while making a point to be safe yourself - use your own gloves, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and sanitize everything! (Credit to Wedjat/Phil Stafford)

Do you have anything else to add? Feel free to share and tell your friends and colleagues your own ideas.
